Jacobo (Jack) Vela Obituary

Today is a sad day for our families. We lost a great man. He was a loving husband and father; a grandfather; a great grandfather; a caring and supporting brother, uncle and friend. He was a leader in the community with a giving and caring heart who was loved by all those who were blessed to have him in their lives. Our love and condolences go to each and every one of you as we all lost someone very special. Jacobo Vela, may you rest in peace , and live long in our memories.


Jacobo (Jack) Vela was born on September 28, 1932 in Laredo, TX. At the tender age of four, Jack lost his mother and was then sent to live with his aunt and uncles in Rio Grande, TX where he lived until his aunt’s passing (1942). He then returned to Laredo and graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1949. Shortly after he married his wife Alicia. Jack and Alicia started their family in Mirando City, TX..Jacobo relocated his family to Duarte, CA where he eventually retired from his position to fulfill his dream of starting his own tax and accounting firm.  Jacobo enjoyed serving his clientele from his Covina office for more than 40 years. Through his tax service, Jacobo was generous with his time and enjoyed helping others through his service with the West Covina Lion’s Club where he served as president (1993-1994). Jacobo was a deeply devout Catholic man from his early days as an alter server to continuing to serve as an usher with his local parish, St. Louise. Jacobo passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8th. He is survived by his wife of 66 years,  Alicia; his children, George (Liz) Vela, Jacobo Vela Jr., Crisanta (Eric) Peña and Laura (Steve) Anenberg;  his grandchildren, Tracy (Alex) Stomberg, Whitney (Richard) Patapoff, Jacob Vela, Christopher Vela, Amber(Cole) Orgill and Jackie Vela; his great grandchildren Eva, Joey, Bronson and Brielle;  his sisters, Irene Floyd and Cristina (Javier) Garza; numerous nephews and nieces, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law. St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Church will host the Rosary recitation on April 16th at 6:00 p.m. and the funeral mass on Friday at 10:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Jacobo by donating time, talent or treasure to the West Covina Lions Club.
